BACKGROUND
This project consists of monitoring research and training efforts to eliminate mercury in hospitals, initiated by Cesues in 2006 with the aim of reducing or eliminating exposure and risks to environmental and occupational health caused by the presence of mercury in hospitals and in the health sector in the Mexican state of Sonora.
The project is also aimed at complying with the international policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) on eliminating mercury in hospitals and the health sector in general.
GOALS
- Complete the diagnostic assessment of mercury inputs in hospitals in the Mexican state of Sonora.
- Initiate the application of the guide to designing and implementing plans for handling mercury wastes from the health sector in the Mexican state of Sonora.
- Initiating the application of the guide to environmentally healthy purchasing, focused on acquiring mercury-free acquisitions for the health sector in the Mexican state of Sonora.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
Documentation and database review; implementation and evaluation of training sessions; and development of pilot projects for initiating the application of guides to handling mercury wastes and making environmentally healthy purchases, focused on mercury-free acquisitions.
RESULTS
- Product 1: Document with results from inventory and diagnostic assessment of systems for managing inputs containing mercury in hospitals in the Mexican state of Sonora.
- Product 2: Document with results from initiating the application of the guide to designing and implementing plans for handling mercury wastes from the health sector.
- Product 3: Document with results from initiating the application of the guide to making environmentally healthy purchases.
