Description
Monarch butterflies are among North America’s most iconic migratory species, yet their populations continue to face significant threats across their breeding, migratory and overwintering habitats. This report presents updated trinational conservation priorities developed collaboratively by monarch conservation specialists from Canada, Mexico and the United States. Building on the 2008 North American Monarch Conservation Plan and subsequent advances in monarch science, monitoring and habitat conservation, the report identifies priority actions to strengthen coordinated efforts across the monarch’s migratory range.
The priority actions are organized around three interconnected themes: systems for collaboration and communication, coordination of science and monitoring, and strategic habitat initiatives. The report is intended for government agencies, conservation organizations, Indigenous communities, academic researchers, industry groups, landowners, community groups and funders involved in or interested in monarch conservation. By aligning shared priorities and supporting evidence-based, collaborative action, this report provides a framework to guide more coordinated and effective monarch butterfly conservation across North America.
