Mejoramiento de la calidad del aire intramuros para reducir la exposición a contaminantes atmosféricos en poblaciones autóctonas de Alaska y otras comunidades indígenas de América del Norte

Los estudios muestran que una combinación de elementos —viviendas inadecuadas, hacinamiento, mala calidad del aire en locales cerrados y otros factores ambientales— está perjudicando la salud de las poblaciones indígenas. Estas condiciones empeorarán con el cambio climático.

Con la implementación del Plan Operativo 2011-2012, la Comisión para la Cooperación Ambiental destinó fondos para establecer un modelo y métodos para mejorar la calidad del aire intramuros en hogares donde habitan niños de poblaciones indígenas. El proyecto mantiene en 2013-2014 su apoyo a este estudio que habrá de generar un conjunto de datos robusto en el que se fundamenten recomendaciones para otros proyectos de vivienda saludable en América del Norte.

Key Accomplishments

• Reductions in indoor contaminants and a decrease in the number of hospitalizations and missed days of school of 211 children in 63 households and eight communities in the State of Alaska

Products

• Development of a healthy homes study protocol, along with information and home/health assessment tools, enabling the replication of this project in communities in Canada and Mexico
• Project results were disseminated to an audience of stakeholders from the three countries (academia, indigenous representatives) through a CECTalks webcast
• Meeting with Canadian researchers, government and aboriginal representatives to present project results and lessons learned, and exchange information on best practices on similar projects
