Internship opportunity: Audience Analysis—North American Environmental Atlas
The Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is offering a paid internship to support efforts related to the visibility and promotion of CEC’s geospatial initiatives, including the North American Environmental Atlas. Eligibility
The successful candidate should meet the following requirements:
- Completed undergraduate degree.
- Experience in marketing, communications or audience analysis.
- Experience in and/or knowledge of geospatial data, environmental science or digital mapping tools is a strong asset.
- Ability to synthesize information and research into a concise summary, with key insights.
- Good organizational, time-management and priority-setting skills.
- Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic, multicultural environment.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstration of strong skills in document preparation and data management, using word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Fluency in English, with excellent written and communication skills. Additional knowledge of French or Spanish is considered an asset.
- Candidates must reside and be authorized to work legally in Canada, Mexico or the United States of America.

- For remote work: Have access to the Internet and have the required hardware (e.g., laptop)
Description of tasks and deliverables
The intern will work with the Environmental Quality Unit under the direct supervision of the Specialist, Geospatial and Environmental Information, with the support of the Communications, Outreach and Engagement unit. The main responsibility will be to produce an audience analysis for the North American Environmental Atlas (the “Atlas”). Tasks will include the following:
- Audience analysis for the North American Environmental Atlas. Assess the audience of the Atlas initiative and the initiative’s geospatial products.
- Based on existing lists of research articles, review and assess the current profile of users of Atlas data.
- Develop user profiles, based on common characteristics.
- Identify potential users for the Atlas initiative.
- Recommend outreach strategies, including social media, to expand the initiative’s reach.
- Support the creation of targeted communications and outreach materials for the Atlas.
- Promotion of the North American Environmental Atlas. Based on the audience analysis, develop recommendations for the promotion of the Atlas in general (communication activities, engagement strategies, etc.).
- Presentation of internship work. The intern will present their work (methodology, findings, recommendations, etc.) to the CEC Secretariat and to CEC’s partners from federal governments’ mapping agencies.
Remuneration
This is a paid internship, remunerated at C$25 per hour for 20–30 hours per week for 12 weeks.

About the CEC
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) was established in 1994 by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, a parallel environmental agreement to NAFTA. As of 2020, the CEC is recognized and maintained by the Environmental Cooperation Agreement, in parallel with the new Free Trade Agreement of North America. The CEC brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including the general public, Indigenous people, youth, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and the business sector, to seek solutions to protect North America’s shared environment while supporting sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.
