Monarch Monitoring Blitz 2023

It’s #MapMonday! Did you see a monarch butterfly recently?

Nearly 2,000 individuals across Canada, Mexico and the United States reported seeing more than 13,000 monarchs and observed more than 40,000 milkweed plants during the 2023 International Monarch Monitoring Blitz, a North American community science initiative among 8 partnering organizations and supported by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation.

Monarch and milkweed observations can be combined to better understand the butterfly’s summer breeding habitat. The distribution of observations across North America also demonstrates the important collaboration across international borders to protect this iconic species.
