{"id":382,"date":"2022-09-28T17:11:56","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T21:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/?p=382"},"modified":"2023-03-03T11:20:13","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T16:20:13","slug":"1-3-top-industry-sectors-and-pollutants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/volumesixteen\/1-3-top-industry-sectors-and-pollutants\/","title":{"rendered":"1.3 Top Industry Sectors and Pollutants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Figure 6<\/strong> shows the 15 industry sectors that reported the largest proportions of releases and transfers between 2014 and 2018, with these sectors accounting for approximately 80% of the total each year.<sup><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> It shows that the metal mining sector stands out among all others, accounting for between 35 and 50% of the North American total each year. Releases and transfers reported by most of these top sectors were relatively consistent during this period, with the exceptions of two sectors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>metal ore mining sector (NAICS 2122):<\/strong> Mexican gold and silver ore mining facilities drove the increase over this period, with releases and transfers reported in that country rising by over 2,000% (from less than one million kg in 2014 to almost 13 million kg 2018); and<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>electricity generation, transmission and distribution sector (NAICS 2211):<\/strong> It showed consistent reductions in total releases and transfers, driven mainly by US utilities (a decrease of 36%, from about 248 million kg in 2014 to less than 158 million kg in 2018), followed by Canadian utilities (a decrease of about 4.5 million kg, or 24%, during this period).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"image\">\n<p><span class=\"ftitle\">Figure 6.<\/span> Top Industry Sectors for Total Releases and Transfers, North America, 2014-2018<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/F06_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2601\" height=\"3250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN.png 2601w, https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN-750x937.png 750w, https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN-1229x1536.png 1229w, https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN-1639x2048.png 1639w, https:\/\/www.cec.org\/tsreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/F06P19-Top-15-Industry-Total-Releases-and-Transfers-2014-2018-Millions-of-kg_EN-440x550.png 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2601px) 100vw, 2601px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In all, 538 pollutants<sup><a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> were reported by North American facilities between 2014 and 2018, with the 20 substances shown in <strong>Figure 7<\/strong> together accounting for approximately 88% of total releases and transfers each year. Just five of these pollutants, including four metals\u2014zinc, manganese, lead, and copper (and their compounds)\u2014as well as nitric acid\/nitrate compounds, together accounted for between 44 and 49% of the annual totals. There were important increases in the reported amounts of some of these pollutants during this period. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zinc compounds:<\/strong> There was a spike in 2014 in on-site disposals or land releases of zinc compounds by US metal ore mining facilities. This was followed by a steady increase in on-site disposals by metal mines in Canada, as well as in transfers of zinc to recycling by certain US sectors, such as motor vehicle manufacturing and iron and steel mills\/ferroalloy manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lead compounds:<\/strong> The US metal ore mining sector and, to a lesser extent, the same sector in Mexico and Canada, accounted for large increases in releases and transfers of lead compounds during this period (with US and Canadian facilities disposing of this waste on site, while Mexican facilities transferred their lead waste to \u201cother disposal\u201d).
