This paper intends to draw attention on the importance of dealing with the environmental problems of the electronics assembly industry in Mexico. The reasons for this concern are motivated by the vulnerable environmental conditions in which these enterprises are set up, particularly those located in the northern Mexican border region, the potentially negative effects on maquiladora workers\u2019s health as a result of using toxic substances in the assembly process, as well as the missed opportunities of the industry as a consequence of lagging behind rapidly advancing international electronics environmental standards. Hence, although there has been a progress in terms of the environmental performance by the industrial sector in Mexico since the NAFTA negotiations started (around 1992), partly as a result of the environmental concerns of the United States civil society, this effort has fallen short of that required.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
