Every year, North American industries and their trade partners import or export thousands of tons of hazardous wastes and hazardous recyclable materials as a result of production processes in our shared region. If not handled properly, hazardous waste can pose substantial threats to public health or the environment.  Environmentally sound management is a key tool to safeguarding health and the environment and also to comply with multiple domestic laws and international agreements in North America.

This easy-to-use trainer explains what can be considered hazardous waste (battery waste, spent solvents, etc.), to which international agreements apply in North America, and outlines environmental import and export requirements for each of the three North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signatories: Canada, Mexico and the United States. Each module concludes with a “Knowledge Check” to test the student’s grasp of the information.
