The CEC commissioned a report to document palm collection and cultivation in Mexico, and its market structure within and outside Mexico. In addition to identifying which groups are producing palm and where it is being sold, the report identified Christian organizations as one of the principal buyers. Palm Sunday services in particular account for 27 million palm fronds worth an estimated US$2.7 million, or close to 10 percent of the total demand for chamaedorea palm in the United States. The CEC therefore initiated a survey to determine the interest of Christian congregations in purchasing palms through a program guaranteeing the palms are sustainably harvested. The results indicated that the majority of the congregations would be willing to pay nearly double the current price they pay for the "certified" palm. Congregations were equally concerned about the social issues associated with fair trade and sustainable resource management.
