This project seeks to reduce environmental risks to children’s health by facilitating collaboration among the Parties with partner institutions and interested nongovernmental groups. An important focus of the work is to foster a better understanding of the interrelationships between environmental quality and the health of children, with a view to providing a foundation for informed decision-making at all levels, including government policy makers, health and environmental professionals, parents and others concerned with the health and well-being of North American children and future generations. The priority issues for the project identified by Council include asthma and respiratory disease and the effects of lead and other toxic substances. More recently, in June 2002, Council added waterborne diseases as a priority area. Also in June 2002, Council adopted the Cooperative Agenda for Children’s Health and the Environment in North America, which serves as the blueprint for action for the project.
