The CEC will sponsor a workshop focused on the hands-on experience of small and medium-size business owners
and managers in implementing environmental management systems (EMS). This project will be a coordinated effort
of the Enforcement Working Group of the Law and Policy Program and the North American Pollution Prevention
Partnership (NAP3) and will draw upon exisiting public and private efforts in this area. The project responds to
Council’s recognition that public-private partnership, which includes governments at the national, state/provincial
and local levels, is the best way to promote the widespread adoption of pollution prevention and the use of
environmental management systems. It also furthers work resulting from the Council direction to the Enforcement
Working Group in 1997 “to explore (1) the relationship between the ISO 14000 series and other voluntary
environmental management systems (EMSs) to government programs to enforce, verify, and promote compliance
with environmental laws and regulations, and (2) opportunities to exchange information and develop cooperative
positions regarding the role and effect of EMSs on compliance and other environmental performance.”
