CEC receives submission on transgenic maize in Chihuahua, Mexico

 
Montreal, 2/02/2009 – On 28 January 2009, Greenpeace Mexico, the Women’s Human Rights Center (Centro de Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres); the Democratic Farmers Union (Frente Democrático Campesino) and El Barzón filed a Submission with the CEC Secretariat pursuant to Article 14 of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). The Submission asserts that the Government of Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental laws with regard to control, inspection, investigation, and assessment of risks from transgenic maize in Chihuahua, Mexico. The CEC Secretariat is currently reviewing the submission to determine whether it meets all the criteria of NAAEC Article 14(1).

The Secretariat’s executive director, Mr. Felipe Adrián Vázquez-Gálvez, has recused himself from involvement in all matters related to this submission.
