| Cinépolis issued an international call for tenders for the architectural design of its new environmentally respectful corporate headquarters. The winning submission was made by KMD (Kaplan McLaughlin Díaz). Located on a hilltop on the outskirts of Morelia, Michoacán, construction of the complex began in late 2007 and will cost an estimated 16 million dollars. Covering nearly 7,000 square meters, this project will be a “statuesque” complex of low articulated buildings endowed with a signature horizontally projected iconic tower. Environmental aspects: Cinépolis’ new installations will be distinguished by their sustainable design and high energy performance, which will enable reductions in operating costs of nearly 30% in comparison with traditional buildings. The building which will be one of the highest energy efficiency buildings in Mexico will have natural lighting throughout and an expandable green roof. In addition to its environmentally favorable characteristics, its design will contribute to its users’ productivity (another important issue in terms of energy conservation). The project will be respectful of conserving the natural environmental in its plazas, terraces and gardens. The orientation of the first two floors will be aligned with the hill and an open plaza at the foot of the iconic tower will connect the reception area with the offices. In contrast, the third floor will face north, thus creating an elevated, floating structure, as seen from the valley below. Inside, the offices will offer a spectacular 180 degree panoramic vista. Adjacent to the central plaza, the complex will include three other buildings: an auditorium, a movie house and a training center.
